a spooky attraction

S: How much do you believe in coincidences?

A: Not much. They are just things that appear to be on the same theme or that arbitrarily happen at the same time. What is there to believe in? That there is some kind of overarching connection? Some kind of transcendental force behind these occurrences?

S: Well here are two apparently unconnected events that shared a theme that happened in this day. Would you like to hear about it? True story. No filter, no artistic licence. Just the reality of what happened today.

A: Go on. Try to make it amusing.

S: I’m not sure how funny it was, although I found it ludicrous. But you shall hear. So in the morning, I had written about the caprices of human attraction.

A: Oh yes, that little piece. Kant’s cant was included.

S: Can’t I have a little of Kant’s cant? Does it not count? Is it not worth a cent? Is he too much of a c***?

A: No ‘I’ in those combinations? The assumption of modesty? It appears that language has defeated you.

S: There is a ‘cint’, but in the word ‘Cintramite’. I could have done something with that. But to go on. I was walking around and a chugger came up to me. It was a young woman. And she wouldn’t let me leave. On top of that, in an awkward and completely inappropriate and unprofessional way, she kept on praising my looks at the end of every paragraph of her pitch.

A: Really? What was she saying?

S: Like I said, the unadorned truth. In the approach, she complimented me on my dress sense. In the first paragraph of the pitch, she said that I had beautiful blue eyes. In the next paragraph of the pitch, she said I had beautiful golden skin. The next one? She said I had a defined jawline. And to end the pitch? She said that I carried myself well.

A: You must have been pleased.

S: Not at all. I wanted to relax. I wanted some time alone. Also, it was inappropriate because she was presenting herself in this pitch as a vulnerable young person. And because she was young, there was no subtlety or polish in these compliments for a pitch. It was awkward. I believe I smiled a few times, although she didn’t compliment my beautiful smile for some reason. On top of everything, I am not single and not interested in cheating.

A: So the scholar of attraction became an object of attraction.

S: You have to factor in that this was a pitch. And I have listened to such pitches throughout my life. They usually begin with a compliment about my eyes when it is a young woman pitching. But to return to the topic, what do you think about this coincidence?

A: There’s however many billion women in the world. At least a few would statistically be attracted to you. It just happens to be after you wrote something about attraction, and also not being attractive to most. If you believed in the transcendental, then you would have to believe that the universe is in a conspiracy against you. Which, knowing you, you do actually believe.
