the fulfilment of desire in the world

S: Desire cannot be fulfilled in this world.

A: Why not?

S: As they say – was it Freud? – there is the pleasure principle and the reality principle.

A: Why the incompatibility?

S: My desire is too great for this world. It is too much. My love is too much. Far too much. My desire for knowledge is too much. My ambition is just too much. And that is just myself. I have not even touched on the topic of the desires of others. Many of those desires which I myself do not even understand.

A: And that is the reason? That desire is too much?

S: Not just that. But exactly what I pointed out. That the desires of others are incompatible with my desires. And because they do not understand my desires, they will never countenance them.

A: Is it a question of misunderstanding? Or do they know what you want and will just stop you getting it out of perversity?

S: It is not perversity. It is meanness. In a fair and a reasonable world, what I would be asking for would be achievable.

A: But is love itself a fair and reasonable thing? Is your love fair and reasonable?

S: I would argue that love is a reasonable choice.

A: Why? And you have loved so many. Is that fair and reasonable to have those desires fulfilled? To have all when some have none?

S: Love is a reasonable choice because the ones that you choose, they are suited to you. You find something in them for yourself. They give you happiness. And is that not a reasonable choice? And, objectively, the ones that I have loved have had many after them. So there must have been something in them. And as for the many that I have loved, what is wrong with loving many? Krishna the god that I am named after, who was himself the god of love, he came to all the women. What about Aphrodite, the goddess of love? She had many lovers?

A: That we will not answer.

S: Tact over honesty? Fear over the courage of one’s convictions?

A: Love we will debate another time. Desire must stand unfulfilled in this respect.

S: One talks about love. One talks about desire. One imagines love. One imagines one’s desire fulfilled. And yet, we leave all this for another day. That is the human condition. And that is why desire must stand unfulfilled. All of those desires that never achieve fruition, that is the human condition. That is what we have made. And if your desires come from those that are seen as other, however reasonable the desire may be, it cannot be achieved in this world. But Faust got into heaven because he strove for it. That is the mantra of the great man and that is the mantra that we must follow. We follow desire, we follow love. In a world that follows hate.
